The Insurance Reform Campaign is a project by consumer bodies:

  • to challenge the assertions by insurance companies that the obliteration of consumers’ injury compensation rights is justified
  • to offer a consumer view in the debate about the insurance ‘crisis’ to balance the extensive public relations resources employed by insurance companies
  • to achieve transparency and fairness in insurance premium calculations and insurance company profitability
  • to expose predatory insurance company practices
  • to achieve transparency and consumer fairness in the commissions paid by insurance companies to intermediaries
  • to encourage legislators to take a stand against big business in favour of consumers and the community generally
  • to advocate for greater competition in the insurance industry including the establishment of government owned insurance offices to provide competitive insurance for consumers and not-for-profit groups
  • to remove discrimination in insurance company policies, premium setting and insurance laws
  • to advocate for insurance companies being required to undertake community service obligations as a requirement of their licence conduct businesses
  • to encourage excellence in risk management in injury prevention and their $15 billion annual cost to the community
  • to encourage tax incentives for injury prevention investment and the widening of tax deductibility status for donations to not-for profit groups
  • to prevent anti-competitive conduct among insurers that would have the effect of keeping premiums high
  • to advocate for consumer protection laws that give incentive to people to accept responsibility for their actions
  • to demand that organisations like APRA be better resourced to allow closer surveillance of insurance companies to prevent disasters like HIH and FAI
  • to advocate for standardised insurance cover to prevent overlapping policies eg between landlord and tenant
  • to advocate for an efficient and fair system of consumer injury compensation laws
  • to demand a fair system of resolution of consumer complaints against unfair insurance company practices
