The Insurance Reform Campaign is a project by consumer
bodies:
- to challenge the assertions by insurance companies that the obliteration
of consumers injury compensation rights is justified
- to offer a consumer view in the debate about the insurance crisis
to balance the extensive public relations resources employed by insurance
companies
- to achieve transparency and fairness in insurance premium calculations
and insurance company profitability
- to expose predatory insurance company practices
- to achieve transparency and consumer fairness in the commissions paid
by insurance companies to intermediaries
- to encourage legislators to take a stand against big business in favour
of consumers and the community generally
- to advocate for greater competition in the insurance industry including
the establishment of government owned insurance offices to provide competitive
insurance for consumers and not-for-profit groups
- to remove discrimination in insurance company policies, premium setting
and insurance laws
- to advocate for insurance companies being required to undertake community
service obligations as a requirement of their licence conduct businesses
- to encourage excellence in risk management in injury prevention and
their $15 billion annual cost to the community
- to encourage tax incentives for injury prevention investment and the
widening of tax deductibility status for donations to not-for profit
groups
- to prevent anti-competitive conduct among insurers that would have
the effect of keeping premiums high
- to advocate for consumer protection laws that give incentive to people
to accept responsibility for their actions
- to demand that organisations like APRA be better resourced to allow
closer surveillance of insurance companies to prevent disasters like
HIH and FAI
- to advocate for standardised insurance cover to prevent overlapping
policies eg between landlord and tenant
- to advocate for an efficient and fair system of consumer injury compensation
laws
- to demand a fair system of resolution of consumer complaints against
unfair insurance company practices
